Please visit https://gist.github.com/67d6357cc9b9b6ba8277ea75ca908baa for details.
The package status will be changed and will be waiting on your next actions.

  • NEW! We have a test environment for you to replicate the testing we do. This can be used at any time to test packages! See https://github.com/chocolatey/chocolatey-test-environment
  • Please log in and leave a review comment if you have questions and/or comments.
  • If you see the verifier needs to rerun testing against the package without resubmitting (a issue in the test results), you can do that on the package page in the review section.
  • If the verifier is incompatible with the package, please log in and leave a review comment if the package needs to bypass testing (e.g. package installs specific drivers).
  • Automated testing can also fail when a package is not completely silent or has pop ups (AutoHotKey can assist - a great example is the VeraCrypt package).
  • A package that cannot be made completely unattended should have the notSilent tag. Note that this must be approved by moderators.

I have taken the time to review your comments and suggestions. I will make the appropriate modifications based on your review. I would like to point out that I believe you may have reviewed an older upload of this package. I say this as I do not have the icons included currently due to them not functioning correctly AND the current package had the Install-ChocolateyInstallPackage changed to the Install-ChocolateyPackage

I will update the rest of the information and resubmit this morning.

Hi,
The included LICENSE.txt does not explicitly allow redistribution of the software, so unfortunatly, I cannot approve this as is.

There are three options:

  • Download the software at runtime in the install script instead of embedding it inside the package
  • Ask the software vendor for permission to redistribute their software, and if they give it, include a pdf of that permission inside the package
  • Ask the software vendor to maintain this package themselves.

Also, there are some other items to deal with:

  • The high virustotal count is still an issue.
  • If possible, can you try to fill some more of the information suggested in the guidelines and suggestions above.

Thanks, TheCakeIsNaOH

djschumacher (maintainer) on 27 Feb 2021 18:34:25 +00:00:

I am not clear on your comment concerning the license.txt

Per SonicWall ->
Product Licensing
SonicWall NetExtender is a free client application
I begged them yesterday to give me any documentaion identifying thier licensing model. I was told repeatedly that it is a free software that ANYONE can download and install.

As for the virustotal -> I downloaded this from Sonicwall and have no control over the content of the exe file.

What "Other" Information are you suggesting be filled out? There is alot of information "above"

I do apologize for any issues this package is causing. Unfortunately, I REALLY need this in order to rollout to our environment as we do a computer refresh. The alternative is going to be a terrible mess and excessively time consuming when this method takes less than 2 minutes.

Hi,

> I was told repeatedly that it is a free software that ANYONE can download and install.

Having a public download of a free piece of software is not the same thing as giving permission to re-distribute the software.

At this point I would suggest downloading the .exe at runtime instead of embedding it inside the package.

> As for the virustotal -> I downloaded this from Sonicwall and have no control over the content of the exe file.

Perhaps this is something you could contact the software vendor about.

> What "Other" Information are you suggesting be filled out? There is alot of information "above"

licenseUrl, packageSourceUrl, releaseNotes, docsUrl, mailingListUrl, bugTrackerUrl, and projectSourceUrl

All of these go in the .nuspec. Not every software has all of these available, e.g. closed source software won't have a projectSourceUrl because their source code is not publicly available.

> Unfortunately, I REALLY need this in order to rollout to our environment as we do a computer refresh.

For your information, the Chocolatey community repository is not recomended for direct organizational use due to a number of reasons.
See the packages disclaimer: https://docs.chocolatey.org/en-us/community-repository/community-packages-disclaimer

It is strongly recommended that organizations host their own packages: https://docs.chocolatey.org/en-us/features/host-packages

You can use something as simple as a network share, or a removable drive. Or you can use something like Sonatype Nexus or Inedo ProGet, both of which can act as caching proxies to the Chocolatey community repository.

Also, if you really need access to this package, you can install specifying an explict version, like choco install sonicwallnetextender --version=10.2.300 and choco will find it. However, this is not really ideal as packages are not immutable until they have been approved, so if this package version needs to be changed more, your clients have an old "version" of this version of the package.

sonicwallnetextender has passed automated validation. It may have or may still fail other checks like testing (verification).
NOTE: No required changes that the validator checks have been flagged! It is appreciated if you fix other items, but only Requirements will hold up a package version from approval. A human review could still turn up issues a computer may not easily find.

Guidelines

Guidelines are strong suggestions that improve the quality of a package version. These are considered something to fix for next time to increase the quality of the package. Over time Guidelines can become Requirements. A package version can be approved without addressing Guideline comments but will reduce the quality of the package.

  • The licenseUrl should be added if there is one. Please correct this in the nuspec, if applicable. More...
  • The nuspec has been enhanced to allow packageSourceUrl, pointing to the url where the package source resides. This is a strong guideline because it simplifies collaboration. Please add it to the nuspec. More...
  • Release Notes (releaseNotes) are a short description of changes in each version of a package. Please include releasenotes in the nuspec. NOTE: To prevent the need to continually update this field, providing a URL to an external list of Release Notes is perfectly acceptable. More...
Suggestions

Suggestions are either newly introduced items that will later become Guidelines or items that are don't carry enough weight to become a Guideline. Either way they should be considered. A package version can be approved without addressing Suggestion comments.

  • The nuspec has been enhanced to allow more information related to the software. More... Please consider adding one or more of the following to the nuspec, if available:
    • docsUrl - points to the location of the wiki or docs of the software
    • mailingListUrl - points to the forum or email list group for the software
    • bugTrackerUrl - points to the location where issues and tickets can be accessed
    • projectSourceUrl - points to the location of the underlying software source
Notes

Notes typically flag things for both you and the reviewer to go over. Sometimes this is the use of things that may or may not be necessary given the constraints of what you are trying to do and/or are harder for automation to flag for other reasons. Items found in Notes might be Requirements depending on the context. A package version can be approved without addressing Note comments.

  • Binary files (.exe, .msi, .zip) have been included. The reviewer will ensure the maintainers have distribution rights. More...
  • If this is a brand new package that has never went through approval before, the reviewer will suggest a change to the package id. More...

Virus Scanner has ben set to rerun

TheCakeIsNaOH (reviewer) on 12 Mar 2021 03:01:27 +00:00:

Alright,

So it looks like the current d5ba2418371a binary has an ok virustotal count of one now, so that is no longer an issue.

The redistribution rights are still an issue, as even if a program is free for anyone to use, that does not mean that is is ok for people to redistribute it. See Google Chrome for an example of this.

Here are the three options again:

  • Download the software .exe at runtime in the install script instead of embedding it inside the package. Just pass Install-ChocolateyPackage a URL instead of passing it a file path.
  • Ask the software vendor for permission to redistribute their software, and if they give it, include a pdf of that permission inside the package
  • Ask the software vendor to maintain this package themselves.

Regards, TheCakeIsNaOH

Hi, there are some items that should be addressed:

  • The LICENSE.txt and VERIFICATION.txt are unneeded because there are no binaries embedded inside this package, so they should be removed.
  • There are multiple commented out lines in the chocolateyinstall.ps1, can those be removed please.
  • Please use the original download link from https://www.mysonicwall.com/muir/freedownloads instead of a bit.ly link

Thanks, TheCakeIsNaOH

We've found sonicwallnetextender v10.2.300 in a submitted status and waiting for your next actions. It has had no updates for 20 or more days since a reviewer has asked for corrections. Please note that if there is no response or fix of the package within 15 days of this message, this package version will automatically be closed (rejected) due to being stale.

Take action:

  • Log in to the site and respond to the review comments.
  • Resubmit fixes for this version.
  • If the package version is failing automated checks, you can self-reject the package.

If your package is failing automated testing, you can use the chocolatey test environment to manually run the verification and determine what may need to be fixed.

Note: We don't like to see packages automatically rejected. It doesn't mean that we don't value your contributions, just that we can not continue to hold packages versions in a waiting status that have possibly been abandoned. If you don't believe you will be able to fix up this version of the package within 15 days, we strongly urge you to log in to the site and respond to the review comments until you are able to.

Two things to follow up:

  1. The package id - as per the automated comment. The id needs to be changed to something like sonicwall-netextender
  2. As per the previous moderation comment - use the proper download URL instead of bit.ly

Unfortunately there has not been progress to move sonicwallnetextender v10.2.300 towards an approved status within 15 days after the last review message, so we need to close (reject) the package version at this time. If you want to pick this version up and move it towards approval in the future, use the contact site admins link on the package page and we can move it back into a submitted status so you can submit updates.

Status Change - Changed status of package from 'submitted' to 'rejected'.
